Tomahawk attack near Lake Mead brings 10-year prison term for Colorado man
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A Colorado man was sentenced on Wednesday to 10 years in prison after he pleaded guilty in a 2018 attack using a tomahawk to attack another person at Lake Mead in 2018.
Christopher Dewey Booker, 48, repeatedly struck and bludgeoned a person using a tomahawk, according to court documents. He was indicted in May 2023 by a grand jury and he entered a guilty plea to one count of assault resulting in serious bodily injury in April 2024.
News reports from 2018 indicate the attack occurred near Stewarts Point on the Overton arm of Lake Mead in the early morning hours of Sept. 7, 2018.
A tomahawk is a type of hatchet, typically with a straight handle.
The victim sustained at least 22 injuries including fractures, lacerations, partial detachment of his left hand and partial paralysis, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office on Wednesday. “These injuries resulted in protracted loss and impairment of the victim’s jaw and permanent impairment of the victim’s left hand,” officials said.
U.S. District Judge James C. Mahan also sentenced Booker to three years of supervised release.
United States Attorney Jason M. Frierson for the District of Nevada made the announcement. The case was investigated by the National Park Service. Assistant United States Attorney Mina Chang prosecuted the case.
