Passenger identified after Miami trolley struck, pinned and killed him on Calle Ocho

The passenger who died Monday after being pinned under a Miami trolley on Little Havana’s Calle Ocho has been identified as 60-year-old Dwayne Haywood.

Around 11:35 a.m., Haywood was trying to unload a bicycle from the front of the trolley by a bus stop at Southwest Eighth Street and 36th Court when the trolley driver continued moving eastbound and pinned him under the vehicle, city spokeswoman Kenia Fallat said.

The incident shut down traffic for several hours.

Miami firefighters removed Haywood from under the trolley but he died at the scene located across the street from La Carreta restaurant, Fallat said. The Miami resident’s body, covered with a white sheet, was there Monday afternoon as diners left the historic Cuban eatery.

The trolley driver, Fallat said, is a third-party hire and not a city employee.

Southwest Eighth Street was shut down from Southwest 37th Avenue to 36th Avenue.
