Train carrying hazardous materials derails in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) — A train derailed early Friday morning in Clark County.

On the railroad tracks near North Bechtle Avenue and Perry Street in Springfield, a train derailment occurred just before 1:30 a.m. Friday morning.

According to a first responder with the Hazardous Materials Response Team of Springfield and Clark County, hazardous chemicals were on board, but reportedly did not spill.

A spokesperson with the city of Springfield says out of 45 train cars, 10 derailed, two of which were tank cars. Neither were punctured and no chemicals spilled or leaked from either car.

“No chemicals have spilled or leaked, and at this time there is no known threat to the safety of anyone living, commuting, or taking part in leisure activities, in or around the immediate area of the derailment, including the use of Snyder Park, which remains open,” said the spokesperson.

No chemicals or debris have been found in nearby Buck Creek either. It is believed there is no threat to the waterway or surrounding areas.

Both tank cars have already been re-railed and will be removed from the scene soon.

The first responder on scene confirmed to 2 NEWS that cleanup is expected to last into the weekend.

North Bechtle Avenue between Perry Street and Snyder Park Road is closed, according to the city of Springfield. Officers with the Springfield Police Division are on scene to direct traffic in the area.

Drivers that normally would need to travel past Snyder Park in either direction on N. Bechtle Ave. are encouraged to use State Route 41 and Upper Valley Pike to enter and leave the area.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the derailment is still yet to be determined. The National Transportation Safety Board will handle the investigation.

In March 2023, another train derailed nearly six miles away on State Route 41.
