Travelers hit the road; try to beat Wiregrass holiday traffic

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — The Fourth of July holiday travel rush is on!

The Circle City is already seeing the rush of travelers, even though it’s six days from the Independence Day holiday.

Hundreds are already cruising to their holiday locations like at busy intersections of Ross Clark Circle and Highway 231 or the Florida-Alabama line on Highway 231.

Some of those travelers are headed to Panama City Beach, saying they made sure to leave on Friday to avoid traffic that will be seen early next week.

“Headed to Panama City for Fourth of July weekend,” John Cheeney said. “We are trying to get away from that massive traffic and try to have a little bit more fun before anything becomes very busy.

AAA expects nearly 72 million Americans to be traveling over 50 miles or more from their home this holiday season

The organization says the best time to travel this holiday season is anytime through Monday evening. Then on Tuesday-Thursday, the worst is between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

AAA says the best time to travel on those days is in the morning.
