Trio charged with trying to sell stolen excavators from Home Depot in Cumberland County

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — Three people from Michigan were charged in Cumberland County Tuesday with trying to sell two stolen excavators from a Home Depot, State Police say.

According to online court dockets, the trio—Jonathan Mumpfield, 30, Rebecca Jones, 41, and Pete Emmerson, 41—faces felony charges of receiving stolen property and Mumpfield also faces a charge of theft.

State Police said in a criminal complaint that they were investigating a theft of a John Deere 26G mini excavator that was owned by Home Depot on June 28. Using a tracking device, Home Depot was able to ping the area the excavator was in and State Police were able to find it along with the person who bought it.

The buyer reported they bought the excavator from Mumpfield through Facebook for $16,000. State Police say they then took the excavator back to Home Depot.

Weeks later in July, the buyer was contacted by Mumpfield again about buying another mini excavator, this time a Yamaha one, also for $16k. They arranged a meeting on Monday to purchase it at a local storage unit.

The trio showed up in a truck that was pulling a trailer, which was owned by Home Depot, and had the excavator on it. Troopers say during the transaction, Mumpfield signed a false name multiple times to hide his identity,

Police approached the truck and saw Mumpfield, who was identified as the person who tried to sell the John Deere excavator, as well as Jones and Emmerson inside the vehicle. A pair of keys for the excavator was found on Mumpfield when he was searched, according to the complaint.

When State Police searched the truck, they found bank cards belonging to Mumpfiled and Emerson, along with a purse that belonged to Jones. GPS information for the Yamaha excavator and the operation and maintence manual was found in the cab of the truck, the charges show.

The truck was a rental and had the wrong registration. According to State Police, there also was multiple registration plates, including a Missouri one hidden in a bag of tools in the truck.

The Yamaha excavator was worth about $45,000 and the John Deere one was worth about $35,000, troopers say.
