Tropical Storm Beryl set to bring impacts to Texas; Louisiana will see increased rainfall

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Tropical Storm Beryl remains in the Gulf of Mexico as of Saturday with maximum sustained winds at 60 mph. It is forecasted to become a Category 1 hurricane again on approach to a landfall in Texas.

A wide portion of Texas will see tropical impacts including strong winds, heavy rainfall and storm surge. While Beryl is not forecasted to bring direct impacts to Louisiana, such as strong winds, indirectly, the storm will increase rain chances and bring a risk for heavy rain next week.

The official track for Beryl from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) brings the center of the storm towards a landfall between Corpus Christi and Matagorda Bay. Tropical storm and hurricane warnings are now in place for most of the coastline. Remember, impacts will occur well outside of the cone of uncertainty.

There will be the danger for life-threatening storm surge inundation along the Texas coastline, with surge of around 2 to 6 feet possible where storm surge watches and warnings are present.

The storm will also bring strong winds of tropical storm strength to a good portion of Southeastern Texas, with hurricane-force winds more likely for portions of the lower to middle Texas coast.

Heavy rainfall will also bring the risk for flash and urban flooding where rivers may see flooding as well. There will also be a threat for quick, spin-up tornadoes in some of the rain bands that move ashore.

It is crucial for interests in these regions to rush preparations to completion before tropical storm conditions begin by mid-to-late Sunday.

As the storm weakens by moving inland following the track forecast to the north, then northeast Monday into Tuesday, the system will help pull up tropical moisture from the Gulf northwards into Louisiana.

This will likely bring bands of tropical downpours, some of which could be heavy and train over one another. This will bring the chance for heavy rainfall and increase the concern for flooding. There is a slight risk (2/4) for flash flooding placed over most of the state.
