New tropical wave moving toward Florida’s east coast could develop

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The National Hurricane Center is tracking two tropical waves in the Atlantic basin.

One of the tropical waves is moving toward Florida’s east coast and could develop this week. The NHC said it is expected to form a few hundred miles northeast of the central Bahamas in a day or two.

The system could continue to develop as it moves westward. Weather officials said the system is forecast to approach the coast of the southeast United States on Thursday or Friday. It has a 30 percent chance of forming over the next seven days.

Another tropical wave in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico could form into a tropical depression or tropical storm by midweek as it moves westward toward the western Gulf Coast.

The NHC said the system will bring heavy rainfall to portions of southern Mexico and Central America. “These rains are likely to cause life-threatening flooding and flash flooding,” the NHC said. The system will not impact Florida. It has a 60% chance of forming over the next two days.
