Trump tops Biden by 5 points in Georgia survey
Former President Trump leads President Biden by 5 points in a hypothetical head-to-head match-up among Georgia voters, according to a poll released Wednesday.
In a Quinnipiac University survey, conducted May 30-June 3, 49 percent of registered voters in the battleground state support Trump, while 44 percent support Biden.
The two major parties’ presumptive nominees get roughly the same level of support from their respective parties: 94 percent of Republicans back Trump, while 4 percent back Biden; 93 percent of Democrats back Biden, while 4 percent back Trump.
Independents are split between the two candidates, with 45 percent supporting each.
Both candidates see their overall support decline in a hypothetical six-candidate match-up, but Trump’s 5-point lead over Biden grows by 1 point: 43 percent to Biden’s 37 percent.
In that hypothetical match-up, independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. gets 8 percent support, Libertarian Party candidate Chase Oliver gets 3 percent, independent candidate Cornel West gets 3 percent, and Green Party candidate Jill Stein gets 2 percent.
“Trump takes a narrow lead in the head-to-head horse race against Biden. Put four other ‘horses’ on the track, including the new Libertarian candidate, and he inches further ahead,” Quinnipiac University polling analyst Tim Malloy said in a statement.
Among Georgia voters, a more crowded general election field seems to do more damage to Biden’s support than to Trump’s.
Biden’s support among Democrats drops to 80 percent in the hypothetical six-way match-up, down from 93 percent in the hypothetical head-to-head against Trump.
Trump’s support among Republicans, on the other hand, drops only to 90 percent in the hypothetical six-person race, down just 4 points from the head-to-head match-up against Biden.
Kennedy gets 10 percent of Democrats’ support in the six-person race, compared to just 5 percent of Republicans’ support.
Independent voters, in the six-way race, swing slightly in Biden’s favor, with 38 percent supporting Biden, 35 percent supporting Trump, and 11 percent supporting Kennedy.
The other three candidates — West, Stein and Oliver — take support mostly from Biden’s base, with 7 percent of Democrats backing one of those candidates, compared to just 2 percent of Republicans.
The poll comes in the immediate aftermath of Trump’s conviction in New York, where he was found guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up a scheme to shield potentially damaging information from the American public ahead of the 2016 election.
In the Quinnipiac survey, 50 percent of voters agree with the verdict, compared to 44 percent who disagree with it. Nearly all Democrats agree with the verdict (96 percent agree, 1 percent disagree), while most Republicans disagree with it (10 percent agree, 86 percent disagree).
Among independents, 52 percent agree, while 42 percent disagree.
The poll included 1,203 self-identified registered voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.
