Two dead in plane crash after leaving NJ airport; What we know

A plane that left a New Jersey airport Thursday morning crashed in Maine a few hours later, killing two people, according to officials.

The single-engine Cirrus SR22 took off from Morristown Municipal Airport around 10:16 a.m. with two people aboard. It crashed and caught fire, just off the runway at Hancock-Bar Harbor Airport in Trenton, Maine.

Police have not identified the victims, pending family notification.

The plane is registered to Miller High Life Aviation LLC, FAA records show. It wasn’t immediately clear Thursday who owns that company.

Publicly available flight tracking programs show the plane arrived at the Morristown airport Wednesday evening after a short flight from Farmingdale, New York. That was one of seven flights for that plane since Sunday when it left Chicago Midway and landed in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Reports say it was very foggy at the airport on Thursday afternoon, although it remains unknown what caused the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Board are investigating the crash.
