Two wounded by shooting in north Urbana

Jul. 5—URBANA — Two people were wounded early Friday morning after a "verbal altercation" led to a shooting in north Urbana.

Champaign police officers were dispatched to an area hospital around 2:58 a.m. on Friday after two people arrived by personal transport with apparent gunshot wounds, the Champaign Police Department said.

There, officers learned that a 41-year-old man from Champaign had suffered a potentially life-threatening injury to his abdomen and a 28-year-old woman from Champaign had suffered a graze-wound. Both remain hospitalized in stable condition.

Officers interviewed the pair, and an initial investigation indicates that the victims were attending a gathering in a parking lot in the 600 block of East University Avenue in Urbana when the man and an unknown subject engaged in a verbal altercation.

As the altercation escalated, the unknown subject apparently produced a firearm and fired a shot, wounding both victims. The subject then fled the area while the victims were transported to the area hospital for medical assistance.

No arrests have been made at this time and the investigation is ongoing.

Officers continue to canvass the surrounding area for witnesses and video footage that may be of investigative assistance. Any resident or business in the nearby area with exterior surveillance camera systems is encouraged to notify the police department.

Future updates may be provided as they become available, Champaign police said.
