UCLA PEERS Clinic honors Sam Rubin with scholarship in his name
More than 200 people showed up Sunday night in Brentwood to support a cause that was near and dear to the heart of our beloved colleague, Sam Rubin.
Sam and the entire Rubin family have supported UCLA’s Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS®) program for more than a decade. It’s a special skills program for autistic youth and those with other social challenges and helps young kids, adolescents and adults learn skills related to friendship, dating and employment.
PEERS has been featured on the Netflix show “Love on the Spectrum,” and a number of stars from the show were at the event.
Sam was scheduled to emcee the event. His good friend and KTLA 5 colleague, Eric Spillman gladly stepped in and volunteered his time to help.
Leslie Rubin, Sam’s wife, and his children Darcy and Colby were also in attendance.
The PEERS Program also started the Sam Rubin Memorial Scholarship in his honor. Donations to the scholarship sends kids to summer camps where they learn valuable lessons about how to connect with people.
It’s fitting as nobody knew how to connect with people better than Sam.
