NEW PHILADELPHIA ‒ Chance Swaney, 27, of Uhrichsville, is facing multiple charges in connection with a shooting on the south side of New Philadelphia on June 26.

The victim, a 41-year-old woman, was last reported to be in stable condition at an area hospital.

Swaney has been charged with attempted murder, a first-degree felony; one count of felonious assault, a second-degree felony; one count of discharge of a firearm on or near a prohibited premises, a second-degree felony; two counts of having weapons while under disability, a third-degree felony; and misdemeanor theft.

According to Police Chief Tessa Pohovey, police received a call around 11:51 p.m. from a resident about a crash and shots fired on Commercial Avenue SE at Goshen Avenue. Shortly after that, they got a call about a woman with a gunshot wound who was in the 300 block of Church Avenue SE.

Police determined that the shooting took place at the intersection of Commercial and Goshen.

Prior to the shooting, a vehicle driven by another woman, with Swaney as a passenger, crashed into the embankment at that intersection, Pohovey said. A second vehicle with a male driver and the victime pulled up to the crashed vehicle and got out of their vehicle.

At that time, Swaney reportedly began shooting at them, the chief said. The second vehicle then left the intersection and pulled into Church Avenue, where the male drive called 911.

A gun was found near the scene of the accident. Pohovey noted the shooting is believed to be drug-related.
