UPDATE: 1 person dead in desert near Sunland Park

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Sunland Park Fire had a busy afternoon on Saturday, July 6 responding to two rescue situations in the desert.

Sunland Park FD and Dona Ana Fire Rescue responded about 4:15 p.m. to the desert area off the Pete Domenici Highway and Bi-national Avenue to assist Border Patrol.

One person died, and a second patient with heat exposure was transported for treatment with non-life-threatening injuries, Sunland Park Fire said.

The fatality is being investigated by the Office of the Medical Investigator, Sunland Park Fire said.

Earlier, an unconscious female patient was found Saturday afternoon at Mount Cristo Rey and was transported to a local hospital with what are being called non-life-threatening injuries, Sunland Park Fire said.

The patient was initially found by Border Patrol, and Sunland Park Fire was called out a little after 2:30 p.m. to the scene.

“Active cooling” was used on the patient before she was transported, Sunland Park Fire.

Sunland Park Fire told KTSM the patient was a woman in her 60s.
