Universal Orlando roller coaster left woman with traumatic brain injury, lawsuit claims

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A lawsuit filed in Orange County, Fla. on Wednesday alleges a Universal Orlando guest sustained a traumatic brain injury while riding the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit roller coaster.

Geriann Irwin Clem and her husband, Richard Clem, are seeking over $50,000 in damages after their visit to the park on Feb. 11.

The Broward County couple claimed that while riding the 65 mph roller coaster, Geriann’s “head shook violently and slammed into her seat’s headrest throughout the duration of the ride.”

The lawsuit alleges Universal was negligent because the couple wasn’t informed of “unsafe and unreasonably dangerous conditions of which (Universal) knew” and did not provide head restraints.

Geriann “suffered severe and permanent personal injuries and damages,” including a traumatic brain injury, physical disability, “loss of capacity for the enjoyment of life,” according to the lawsuit. The couple is seeking compensation for the above, plus ongoing medical and rehabilitation expenses and lost wages.

A spokesperson for Universal shared the company does not comment on pending litigation.
