University of Chicago issues campus security alert after shooting in Hyde Park early Sunday morning

CHICAGO — The University of Chicago issued a campus security alert following a shooting early Sunday morning in Hyde Park.

According to officials, just before 5:30 a.m. Sunday, Chicago police and University of Chicago police responded to calls of shots fired at 5717 South Cottage Grove Avenue. Upon arrival, police say officers found three victims on the sidewalk with gunshot wounds.

According to police, witnesses observed someone in a dark-gray SUV point a gun from the vehicle and fire shots at several people standing near a parked car in what initially looks to be a targeted shooting.

The shooter’s SUV then fled south on Cottage Grove Ave., police say, away from the University of Chicago Medical Center. The victims were transported to the University of Chicago Adult ER. Police do not yet know the victims’ affiliation to the university.
