CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – Former President Donald Trump is set to hold a rally at Bojangles Coliseum this week with upgraded security measures.

It will be his second public rally since the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania that left Trump injured and a crowd member fatally wounded.

Secret Service had an opportunity to utilize its new protection measures at the Republican National Convention last week in Milwaukee, WI.

At Trump’s rally in Michigan over the weekend, uniformed and plain-clothes officers monitored several blocks in downtown Grand Rapids.

Security experts say it’s likely extended perimeters will become more common at political events.

Many politicians, including South Carolina Republican Representative Nancy Mace, are advocating for tighter protections.

“It’s not a partisan issue, this is a very non-partisan issue. If you’re President of the United States, if you’re running for president, including RFK Jr., you should get Secret Service. This should never happen in this country,” Mace told News Nation.

The investigation into how a shooter was allowed near a former president is heating up.

Congressional leaders grilled Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle in a committee hearing Monday before she resigned on Tuesday. Representatives on the House Oversight Committee were left frustrated by Cheatle’s refusal to divulge specifics.

The director acknowledged the agency’s missteps and said the Secret Service was alerted “between two and five times” about a suspicious person nearby.

Cheatle resigned from her position Tuesday morning. Unlike the July 13th rally, the event in Charlotte will be indoors.

Former Secret Service and law enforcement agents tell Queen City News indoor events are easier to secure and monitor with cameras.

The event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday with doors opening at 2 p.m.

Attendees are required to reserve tickets online.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police released the following statement to Queen City News.

Residents can expect delays between noon and 10 p.m. around Bojangles Coliseum. There will also be delays near Charlotte Douglas Airport between 4 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. CMPD and the Secret Service have a strong partnership and are working together to provide a safe experience for the former President and all attendees.
