Upper Marlboro man killed in shooting hours after community vigil at high school

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — The Prince George’s County Police Department (PGPD) identified the man who was shot and killed Friday night, just after a vigil was held at a high school in Upper Marlboro.

PGPD said 24-year-old Shahid Omar Jr., of Upper Marlboro, died shortly after the double shooting.

The vigil and shooting both happened at Wise High School.

Just after 10 p.m., shots rang out in the school’s parking lot. Police said a woman and Omar Jr. were found shot.

He was taken to a hospital where he died.

The woman suffered a non-life-threatening injuries.

As of Saturday afternoon, PGPD was still looking for those who were involved. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at (301) 516-2512.

In the hours before the shooting, hundreds of people gathered in the high school’s gymnasium to honor the lives of three former students who were killed in a car crash last week.

24-year-old Khyree Jackson, 23-year-old Isaiah Hazel and 24-year-old Anthony Lytton, Jr. were driving on Route 4 at Presidential Parkway when another vehicle hit them. All three men died in the crash.

They had played football at Wise before going on to play ball in college.

Jackson was recently drafted to the Minnesota Vikings, while Hazel was pursuing a Master’s degree and Lytton was set to play football at Bowie State this fall.
