Utah man flees scene after gun ‘went off’ in Walmart self-checkout, police say

RICHFIELD, Utah (ABC4) — A man allegedly fled a southern Utah Walmart after his gun — situated in the waistband of his pants — “went off” in the self-checkout area, Richfield City Police said Monday.

Zachery Hampton, 26, was allegedly adjusting his handgun when it fired. After that, police said he immediately fled the scene. Police responded to reports of the gunshot and identified the man as Hampton.

They traced him to a residence in Richfield and took him to the Sevier Valley Hospital to evaluate his injuries. Police did not release the extent of his injuries or his current condition. Officials said no one else was injured by the gunshot.

Police said Hampton was taken into custody, however, they did not disclose what charges he faces, if any.

Hampton pleaded guilty in March to aggravated assault, which was commuted from a third-degree felony to a class A misdemeanor. The following month, he was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, according to court documents.
