Utah sees flash flood potential in the south, smoke in the north

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – Happy Monday, Utah! Today’s weather forecast is a copy and paste of yesterday’s. Daytime highs will run about five degrees above seasonal norms for most.

The Wasatch Front is flirting with triple-digits with highs in the upper 90s to low 100s. Temperatures gradually cool as you go southward thanks to shade from increasing cloud coverage with highs in the low 90s, but warm spots like St. George will stay hot in the mid to upper 100s.

The bottom line? Thunderstorms in southern Utah could produce flash floods in some areas and light smoke will make for poor air quality.

Thunderstorms will stick around today in southern Utah, some of which could have the potential for flash flooding. The bulk of the moisture will be focused in south-central and southwest Utah, especially in higher terrain. Torrential rain in high elevations will run downstream to low elevations like slot canyons, dry washes, and creeks.

Flash floods could pop up in places that didn’t see rain. Flash flooding remains in the “possible” category for all our outdoor recreation areas in southern Utah, except for Arches National Park in the east where less rain is expected. Flash flooding remains a concern into tomorrow as well.

Northern Utah is not likely to see wet weather apart from the Nevada/Utah border near Wendover where a brief afternoon shower could bubble up. Clear skies are expected – but they may not be so blue. Smoke from regional wildfires in the northwest will be carried into northern Utah making for hazy skies.

The particulate matter from the smoke and elevated ozone levels from the heat will put the Wasatch Front in the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category today, with moderate air quality elsewhere.

High pressure remains in control for the next few days, which means we’ll slowly be turning up the heat. More cities will join the triple-digit club tomorrow and into the midweek. Meanwhile, monsoonal moisture and thunderstorms will moderate temperatures in southern Utah, so not much change temperature-wise.
