Vegetable products recalled from Illinois stores due to potential listeria contamination

In Illinois, a variety of vegetable products found at Kroger have been recalled due to potential Listeria Monocytogenes contamination.

A July 26 announcement shared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration noted Supreme Service Solutions LLC, which does business as Supreme Produce, is working with Kroger to recall various items distributed to Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio stores.

Routine sampling from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development found the possible contamination, according to the announcement.

Supreme Produce foods including pico de gallo, guacamole, diced peppers, a vegetable bowl and grilling vegetables are among the products which have been recalled. The items are packaged in plastic “grab-n-go containers of various sizes,” the announcement noted.

A full list of recalled items can be found at https://www.fda.gov/safety/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts/supreme-service-solutions-llc-voluntarily-recalls-supreme-vegetable-products-because-possible-health.

“The product(s) involved is past its shelf life and should already be out of distribution,” the announcement noted, “but if consumers have any product they question, do not consume it, but rather discard it.”

What are the symptoms of Listeria?

The recent announcement said healthy people who are infected may experience short-term symptoms including:

  • abdominal pain

  • diarrhea

  • high fever

  • nausea

  • severe headache

  • stiffness

For those who are pregnant, however, Listeria can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth. Along with this, the announcement noted Listeria can “cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.”

No illnesses have been reported, according to the announcement.

Wiers Farm Inc. recalled foods due to possible contamination

The latest recall came after Wiers Farm Inc. recalled various cucumber products on July 12 due to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s finding of potential contamination.

The recall soon expanded to other vegetables sold in several states – including Illinois. A July 22 announcement stated, “Products involved in this expanded recall were packed between July 5-12.”

The announcement said bulk items were distributed to Walmart and Kroger stores in Illinois. Walmart did not list any Peoria locations among the affected stores.
