‘Very heroic’ Kauai officers recognized for dramatic cliffside rescue
LIHUE, Hawaii (KHON2) — Three police officers were recognized and honored for their heroism by the Kauai Police Commission after responding to an automated emergency traffic collision report from an iPhone.

KPD officers Matthew Kaluahine, Jesse Castro and Acting Sergeant Jason Scalzo were dispatched to an area near Waikoko Beach in Hanalei just before 1 a.m. on June 22.
Upon arriving at the scene, the three scrambled to save a car and ultimately a life when they saw a car situated partway down the cliffside, lodged between two trees and about 30 feet from falling into the ocean.

Inside the car was an unresponsive man. Officer Kaluahine rappelled down to the car and was able to stop the engine, secure the vehicle and wait with the man until fire department personnel arrived.
“Very, very heroic. They got the recognition and all the officers are actually humble and they don’t like to be in front of the camera and get the limelight. This is just what they do and what they’re made of,” said KPD Captain Rod Green.
The man inside the vehicle survived thanks to the officers’ swift actions, teamwork and professionalism.
Although they were uncertain if anyone remained inside the vehicle, these officers did not hesitate. They swiftly utilized the resources at their disposal, taking decisive action in a situation where every second counted. Their courage and quick thinking were vital in preventing a potential tragedy, and we are incredibly proud to recognize their exemplary service.
