Victim of gunfire in Simi Valley identified

Authorities on Thursday named the man killed by gunfire in Simi Valley Tuesday night.

Louis Thompson was 67 and a Simi Valley resident, the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office said Thursday. Thompson died of a gunshot wound to the chest. The manner of death was deemed homicide.

The shooting was reported shortly before 9 p.m. Tuesday along an equestrian path in the 5500 block of Crinklaw Lane, according to the Simi Valley Police Department.

Thompson and another man, 32, had an altercation, police say. The younger man, who was licensed to carry a concealed firearm, reportedly produced a handgun and fired a single round at the older man.

Thompson died at the scene despite life-saving measures. The younger man stayed on scene and cooperated with homicide detectives.

Police have said both men lived in the nearby Knolls area but didn't know each other.

The dispute may have started over one of the men driving a golf cart in the area, authorities said.

As of Thursday afternoon, no arrest had been made, according to police.

The investigation remained active and the police department was working with the Ventura County District Attorney's Office to determine whether charges will be filed, officials said.
