NEW YORK CITY (WWLP) – The iconic Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree has officially arrived in New York City, marking the official start of the city’s holiday season.
On Saturday morning, the massive 74-foot Norway Spruce from West Stockbridge, Massachusetts, was brought onto Center Plaza and carefully hoisted into place in front of 30 Rockefeller Plaza.
The journey and placement of the tree, which weighs 11 tons and measures 43 feet in diameter, marks a beloved annual tradition for New Yorkers and visitors alike.
The tree was lifted off its 115-foot trailer on Saturday morning in a process that involved a crane to raise and place the tree securely at its holiday home. As per tradition, a steel spike was driven into the trunk of the spruce to help anchor it. The tree will soon be adorned with thousands of twinkling lights, awaiting its formal lighting ceremony.

The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting ceremony, scheduled for later this month, will keep the tree illuminated nightly through early January.

Security researchers say malicious hackers have been exploiting a newly discovered vulnerability in Fortinet firewalls to break into corporate and enterprise networks. In an advisory published Tuesday, security product maker Fortinet confirmed that a critical-rated vulnerability in its FortiGate firewalls, tracked as CVE-2024-55591, is “being exploited in the wild.” Fortinet made patches available, but security researchers have warned that hackers have been mass-exploiting the vulnerability as a zero-day — meaning before Fortinet was aware of the vulnerability and made fixes available — since December.
Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) is planning to introduce legislation to extend the TikTok ban deadline by 270 days. TikTok has warned of a looming shutdown in just five days, but the new legislation, officially called the Extend the TikTok Deadline Act, would give TikTok more time to divest from its Chinese parent company ByteDance, if approved by Congress. TikTok is currently expected to "go dark" on January 19, unless the Supreme Court intervenes to delay the ban.
