Update: 1 dead, 4 injured, 30 people displaced after central Las Vegas apartment fire

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A dramatic video 8 News Now obtained captures a person dangling out of the second-floor window of an apartment building that was on fire.

The fire happened on Sunday night in the 3900 block of Spencer Street at the Riverbend Village Apartments near Flamingo Road.

According to the American Red Cross, Sunday’s deadly fire displaced 19 residents but that number could rise.

The video 8 News Now obtained showed a person with one leg out the second-story window as flames blocked off the exits.

Out of desperation to escape, the person jumped from the window and landed on a bush.

A minute later, another person was seen on video running out of the building covered in flames. They then dropped to the ground and quickly got back up with the flames extinguished.

All of the action was occurring while a massive fire tore through the apartment complex.

“I go outside and there’s just big flames. Smoke everywhere. I see it catch on the trees and it went to different buildings,” Kayden Halbert said.

Halbert added that some people were acting out of desperation on Sunday.

“People were trying to run back and get their stuff. It was bad,” Halbert said.

While 8 News Now was at the property, a woman and her husband approached reporter Joshua Peguero asking for help.

“I’m just trying to find my son. I know that he was there. He spent every weekend there, and I’m just trying to find my baby,” the woman, who requested anonymity, said.

She told 8 News Now she drove to Riverbend after her son’s friend received a call.

“One of my son’s friends was notified that my son’s partner passed in this fire, and I know they were together last night,” she said.

According to the Clark County Fire Department, four other people were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The Clark County Coroner’s Office has yet to release the identity of the two people who died.

“This was a tough fire, so it’s been a rough July. It’s just been a lot of those multi-family fires that we are seeing,” Red Cross Executive Director Rachel Flanigan shared.
