VIDEO: Thieves attack store owners in San Jose’s Japantown

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) – Owners of a family-run convenience store in San Jose were beaten by thieves stealing beer. The two sisters who were attacked are now seeking justice.

It happened at Smile Market on North 4th Street in San Jose’s Japantown last week. The thieves tried to take a can of beer when one of the sisters tried to stop them. Both suspects hit her and pushed her to the ground.

“We’re lucky we didn’t have anything happen,” said Phoung Ton.

Ton says she was just arriving at the shop when she saw her sister getting attacked. The two sisters tried to stop the thieves… but got hit.

“No, we weren’t trying to fight them, but they hurt us. I went to the hospital,” said Ton.

Both sisters are fine physically, but after 16 years of working at this shop, they are hurt emotionally. They say something like this has never happened before.

San Jose police say the suspects were gone by the time officers showed up. A detective has been assigned to the case, and the investigation is ongoing.

Phoung and her sister are thankful for their loyal customers, and until those thieves are caught, their faces are plastered on store walls for all to see.
