Video: Unruly crowd surrounds RTA bus in Cleveland

CLEVELAND (WJW) – Mike Kontos says almost daily he witnesses dangerous drivers racing past his restaurant and doing circles in the streets.

“It happened again early Sunday morning, and it has been going on for months,” Kontos told the FOX 8 I-Team. “It is just about every day.”

He said in December one driver lost control and crashed into his building, Angela’s Family Restaurant, located on St. Clair.

“I am still getting repairs done,” Kontos said. “I am fed up. I want something done.”

Cleveland Police Public Information Officer Sgt. Wilfredo Diaz told us officers are investigating Sunday’s incidents.

“We are aware of the planned meet that occurred this Sunday,” Diaz said. “As part of the summer crime plan, our officers are proactively addressing these car meets. Officers responded to and dispersed vehicle car meets at two different locations this particular night. We continue to investigate these planned car meets and strongly urge our community to call us with any information that may assist in deterring this type of dangerous activity. “

Several people also called Cleveland dispatchers early Sunday, and reported that there were about 25 cars in the area near I-77 exit ramp and Broadway. The callers said the drivers were drag racing and doing doughnuts in the street.

Video on social media shows large crowds surrounding an RTA bus near E. 37th and Broadway around 2:30 a.m. Sunday. An RTA official says people blocked the bus. The crowd finally left after police arrived.

“It is unfortunate that the citizens of this city have to deal with this,” said Cleveland Council President Blaine Griffin. “Our streets are getting taken over and at some point in time, we’ve got to start holding people accountable.”

Cleveland Councilman Mike Polensek agrees and says he is hoping police are able to make some arrests before someone gets seriously injured.

“Residents and businesses want the law laid down,” Polensek said. “Enough is enough. There is no excuse for this insanity.”
