VIRGINIA (DC News Now) — Virginia held its 2024 primary elections on Tuesday, including several key races for the U.S. House of Representatives and noteworthy local races such as the Mayor of Alexandria.

Below is information about the candidates who won primary elections.

U.S. Senate (R) – Hung Cao

Hung Cao is a U.S. Navy special operations officer. He was endorsed by former President Donald Trump, who said that Cao would “defend our always under siege Second Amendment,” secure the border and stop inflation, according to the Associated Press.

Cao will face off against incumbent Sen. Tim Kaine (D) in the November general election.

U.S. House District 7 (D) – Eugene Vindman

Eugene Vindman is a U.S. Army veteran. He was born in Ukraine before he moved to the U.S., according to his website. Vindman hopes to protect abortion rights, pass gun safety legislation and more.

Vindman is known for his role as a key player in Trump’s first impeachment.

U.S. House District 7 (R) – Derrick Anderson

Derrick Anderson is a U.S. Army veteran and attorney. He grew up in the Fredericksburg area, which he will represent if he wins the November general election. He previously sought the Republican nomination in 2022 and finished around 5 percentage points behind the winner Yesli Vega, according to the Associated Press.

Anderson promised that he would “stand up to the big spenders in both parties, get inflation under control and fight for a balanced budget,” according to a video he released when he launched his campaign.

Voters in Virginia head to polls for primary election

U.S. House District 10 (D) – Suhas Subramanyam

Suhas Subramanyam is a Virginia State Senator who represents District 32. Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton, who currently holds the District 10 seat, endorsed him. Wexton announced that she would not run for re-election following a medical diagnosis.

According to his website, he promised to stand strong against “MAGA extremists” and defend abortion rights.

U.S. House District 10 (R) – Mike Clancy

Mike Clancy is a lawyer in the state of Virginia. According to his website, he served on Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s Technology & Cybersecurity Transition Team. Clancy’s campaign promised stronger border policies and to curb government spending.

Alexandria City Mayor – Alyia Smith Parker Gaskins

Alyia Gaskins is a public health practitioner, urban planner and City Council member. She hopes to focus on education, housing, public safety and climate if elected in November, according to her website.

She would be the city’s first female Black mayor if elected.
