A visit from an ice cream truck offers sweet relief from this week’s heat

ANNANDALE, Va. (DC News Now) — As kids left the Wakefield Audrey Moore Rec Center, they were greeted by a familiar sound and welcome treat: an ice cream truck.

The visit from the Scoops2U truck comes in the early days of what is expected to be a scorching hot week in the Washington D.C. area.

Zach Cosler, the sales manager at Scoops2U, was driving the truck and serving the sweet treats to people, young and old, for free. He was sharing the news that the company is in its first year of a partnership with the county’s rec centers providing wholesale ice cream over the summer.

DC braces for heatwave with soaring temperatures all week

“This is like our bread and butter,” he said. “These hot summer days.”

Usually, Scoops2U focuses on catering and bringing their trucks to the events. Cosler said this is a fun opportunity to connect with the community, but it does come with challenges on the hottest of days.

“People come up to the truck and they say, ‘Oh, it must be great in there. It’s nice and cool.’ And I’m like, ‘No, no, the cooler is for the ice cream, right? The ice cream is nice and cool, but it’s actually quite hot in here,'” he said.

Battling the heat requires constant water breaks – and the occasional ice cream break – as well as time in the shade and inside.

The kids at summer camp, however, felt relief as soon as they were handed an ice cream pop.

“Not even a little,” one camper said to DC News Now when asked if they felt hot.

The excitement was palpable, with six-year-old Victoria describing in great detail her choice of an ice cream cone with a cookies ‘n cream twist — crushed cookies on top.

“It’s yummy and it’s bunched in because cookies ‘n cream — cookies are one treat, but in ice cream, it’s better,” she said.

DC News Now meteorologist Damon Matson says the worst of the heat wave is yet to come, with air temperatures hitting the mid-90s on Thursday before quickly spiking into the upper 90s Friday onward.
