VSP reports man dead after trooper shooting on Blue Ridge Parkway

BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. (WFXR)– Virginia State Police report a 44-year-old man is dead after a shooting involving a trooper on the Blue Ridge Parkway on Thursday, July 18.

According to state police, a Virginia State Trooper attempted to stop a motorcycle on Rt. 460 in Botetourt County for reckless driving. The trooper turned on his emergency equipment and lights, and the motorcyclists allegedly refused to stop, beginning a pursuit.

The motorcyclist exited Rt. 460 onto the Blue Ridge Parkway and continued north for another six miles to the 97.7 mile marker. State Police say the motorcycle then attempted to exit the Blue Ridge Parkway, crashing into a closed gate on the Bedford side of Black Horse Gap when the motorcyclist allegedly produced a firearm.

The trooper discharged his duty weapon and struck the suspect. The 44-year-old suspect, whose identity is unknown at this time, died at the scene.

VSP says a passenger on the motorcycle was injured in the crash and taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The trooper was not injured but has been placed on administrative leave until the completion of an investigation.
