Walmart robbed on July Fourth

Jul. 5—Waynesville Police are investigating an armed robbery at Walmart that occurred on Independence Day.

Around 10 a.m. on July 4, a man entered Walmart and made his way to the customer service desk. He handed the cashier a note that said he had a gun and demanded money.

At some point, the suspect showed the gun. He also threatened to kill the associate working at the customer service desk.

The suspect was given a large sum of money, all in cash.

As the suspect was leaving, he dropped the bag of money and the gun in front of Subway inside of Walmart, but picked the items up as he made his escape from the store.

After exiting the building, he left the scene in a black newer model Cadillac Escalade.

"We haven't heard of anything else similar in the surrounding area," Waynesville Police Chief David Adams said.

The chief said it's rare to see a crime of this nature occur over a holiday such as July Fourth. Typically, they see an increase in domestic-related incidents due to people consuming alcohol.

"You don't usually hear someone robbing that busy of a place like a retail establishment," Adams said. "It's rare in this area, at least."

Adams said there is no immediate threat to the community, but encouraged citizens to be vigilant.

"Do not approach him," Adams said. "Use caution."
