Want to be a poll worker on Election Day? Come to the Board of Elections open house

Ever thought about being a poll worker on Election Day? Now's your chance to find out all the details.

The Washington County Board of Elections is hosting an open house for National Poll Worker Recruitment Day from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Aug. 1, at the Washington County Election Center, 17718 Virginia Ave., Hagerstown.

Brochures and applications will be available, as well as additional information about elections and election judges. Election judges and staff will be on hand for questions and running demonstrations with a poll book, a ballot-marking device and a scanning unit.

Those who want to learn more about elections and how Election Day usually works or are interested in becoming an election judge are also welcome.

New U.S. Commerce Department report endorses 'open' AI models
The U.S. Commerce Department on Monday issued a report in support of "open-weight" generative AI models like Meta's Llama 3.1, but recommended the government develop "new capabilities" to monitor such models for potential risks. Authored by the Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), the report said open-weight models broaden generative AI's availability to small companies, researchers, nonprofits and individual developers. For these reasons, the government shouldn't place restrictions on access to open models, it suggests — at least not before investigating whether restrictions might harm the market.

Users will be able to get the first taste of Apple Intelligence as Apple has started to make some of the features of its AI suite available with the iOS 18.1 developer beta released Monday.
