Update: Henry County officials offer information on suspect shot by law enforcement

HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – A suspect was shot by law enforcement Monday in Ridgeway, according to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect, identified as 43-year-old Timothy Howell, had been sought by investigators since allegedly shooting Shannon Bryan on Mitchell Road back in March.

In a press conference on Monday night, Henry County Sheriff Wayne Davis stated that Howell had fled the scene of the Mitchell Road shooting before officers arrived on March 2nd. Following that incident, arrest warrants were issued for Howell on charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon with a violent record. Subsequently, deputies from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office collaborated with the U.S. Marshals Service to locate Howell.

According to Sheriff Davis, Howell was tracked by Henry County deputies, Martinsville Police Department officers, and members of a U.S. Marshals Service Task Force to a campsite in a wooded area off Wright Road in Ridgeway. Sheriff Davis reported that Howell was armed when law enforcement personnel discovered him, and upon their announcement, Howell allegedly pointed a gun at officers, prompting them to open fire. Howell sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

Sheriff Davis further mentioned that immediate life-saving measures were initiated by law enforcement after the shooting. Howell was subsequently airlifted to a hospital in Virginia. As of Monday night, Sheriff Davis said Howell was in stable condition.

During further investigation inside the camper Howell was found in, Sheriff Davis said investigators found more firearms and suspected methamphetamine. Officials have not said if more charges will be filed.

At the request of Sheriff Davis, Virginia State Police is investigating the shooting.
