WATCH: NMSP arrests suspect after 71-year-old stabbed to death at rest stop

COLFAX COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – An elderly couple was moving from Colorado to Arizona when a pit stop in New Mexico ended in tragedy.

The husband was attacked, and their SUV was stolen. The wife was left all alone with her husband as he bled to death. Later on, police caught up to the stolen vehicle and arrested the suspect. A video was released of the incident.

In April, a woman came out of the restroom at a Thaxton rest stop off I-25 in Colfax County to see her husband, David Adams, lying on the ground. He had been stabbed and was bleeding, and their vehicle was missing.

Adams passed away, and the last word he said to his wife was, “Hospital.” An alert went out, and a New Mexico State Police (NMSP) officer spotted the stolen SUV. He tried to pull it over, but the driver took off. A PIT maneuver eventually stopped him.

The driver was identified as Dorien Ray, 21, of Georgia. Officials claimed the victim’s blood was on his jacket. They also reported Ray had two debit cards belonging to the victim’s wife.

Ray pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, armed robbery, and auto theft. He’s being held in jail pending trial.

Ray is also facing charges out of Colorado because officials claimed they found keys to a stolen SUV from Aurora. That vehicle was found at the rest area where Adams was murdered.
