28-year-old Robert Merritt has been charged with first-degree aggravated sexual abuse and first-degree property damage after a July 10 incident in the parking lot of Cyranos restaurant, according to court records.

“When you’re talking about a victim of a sex crime, you know, it’s very sensitive and it’s very detrimental to all parties involved. And so it definitely, you know, it takes a toll on the whole community,” Lt. Jillian McCoy said.

Victims told police that Merritt followed them into the restaurant, yelling profanities and chasing them. Police report that he also inappropriately grabbed another female in the parking lot.

“The suspect was actually able to stop the women. One woman in particular was pinned up against a car and she was sexually assaulted,” McCoy said.

Victims ran into the restaurant and contacted police.

“Nothing like this has ever happened here. I generally feel very comfortable walking to my car at night. We’re just glad that they caught the guy. It’s quite a relief for everybody that is in the community,” Melissa Downes, employee of the restaurant, said.

Police believe there could be more victims. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Webster Groves Police Department at (314) 645-3000.
