Wells Beach safety: What you need to know about lifeguard coverage

WELLS, Maine — The 2024 Wells Ocean Rescue crew is gearing up for the beach season. However, due to staffing shortages and limited available lifeguards, some adjustments to coverage have been put in place.

This year, the number of lifeguard stands along the beachfront has been reduced from 10 to 7. Each available lifeguard will work maximum hours while adhering to age work/hour restrictions.

There will no longer be lifeguard coverage at Crescent Beach in Wells, Maine.

Of the seven stands, two will be stationed on Drakes Island, and five will be on Wells Beach. These include one at Casino Square, one at the jetty, and three positioned between those stands (at Public Way 13, Public Way 7, and Public Way 3).

Although there will no longer be lifeguard coverage at Crescent Beach, the public may still swim there at their own risk.

Lifeguards will be on duty from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. as in past years.
