West Des Moines police recover stolen cruiser after high-speed chase Thursday morning

West Des Moines police say that a woman who stole a police cruiser and led officers on a high-speed chase is in the hospital receiving treatment and evaluation for a mental health concern.

According to a West Des Moines police news release, officers were dispatched around 2 a.m. Thursday to the area of S. 60th Street and Village View Drive. They encountered an adult female with an "apparent mental health concern" who was able to slip into one of their cars and drive away.

The news release said that the car was tracked by GPS. The pursuit went north on I-35 and eventually east on I80/35, reaching a top speed of 125 mph, before the car hit spike strips near 86th street. Eventually, the cruiser stopped in Altoona near Eighth Street and Highway 65.

The woman was then taken into custody before being transported to an area hospital for treatment. Another police car sustained minor damages, but there were no injuries to any officers or bystanders.

West Des Moines Police were assisted by Iowa State Patrol, Urbandale Police, Altoona Police and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. The case remains open for investigation and criminal charges are pending.
