A strong low-pressure system brought cool Canadian air into the mid-Atlantic and southern states on Monday and Tuesday, dropping air temperatures into the 70s in Somerset County and pulling cooler air further south into Virginia and North Carolina, said David Martin, a forecaster with the National Weather Service Forecast Office in State College.

Children in the summer day camp program at Windber Recreation Park were jumping and splashing around in the park's pool on Monday afternoon, even though the air temperature was in the low 70s. Seasonal temperatures in the 80s will return to Somerset County on Wednesday, just in time for the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

"The cooler air will be replaced by warmer air from Wednesday on," he said. "Temperatures (in Somerset County) will be daily in the low-to-mid 80s – more typical values for this time of year."

Martin said the weather won't be as extremely hot and humid as we saw in mid-June, but the humidity will increase as air temperatures rise later in the week.

"There will be a daily chance of showers and thunderstorms, but not all day or all the time," he said. "The weather will be near normal for early July."
