A Texas woman who was critically injured while her husband died after allegedly being electrocuted in a hot tub at a resort in Mexico has filed a wrongful death lawsuit, which includes chilling details about the incident.

According to the complaint, which was obtained by PEOPLE, as "dusk began to set" on June 11, Jorge Guillen and Lizette Zambrano decided to enjoy the hot tub at the Sonoran Sea Resort in Puerto Peñasco.

However, as soon as he got into the water, "Jorge was exposed to an electrical current" and "keeled over," per the complaint.

After seeing her husband collapse, Zambrano "sprang forward from the pool deck to try and grab Jorge’s body from the jacuzzi. However, upon touching Jorge and the water, Lizette was electrically shocked" as well.

While other patrons leapt into action, and were able to get Zambrano out of the water, attempts to save Guillen were less successful. "Patrons attempted to assist, grabbing a shepherd’s cross and other items...However, the metal from the objects carried the electrical current and began shocking the rescuers," the suit read.

The complaint alleged that it took 10 minutes before resort staff engaged "the emergency shutoff for the jacuzzi" or attempted "any rescue of either Jorge or Lizette."

"It's absolutely terrifying," attorney Tej Paranjpe told the Associated Press in a statement, alleging that there "was not a single staff member that did anything while Jorge was getting continuously shocked again and again underwater."

PEOPLE contacted Casago LLC, a vacation rental provider named in the lawsuit, for comment.

The lawsuit further claimed that the electrical wiring of the hot tub was "faulty," which he resort should have had knowledge of.

"There is no reason this should have happened. Hotels and resorts have a duty to ensure guest safety," attorney Tej Paranjpe said in a press release about the lawsuit. "At no point did resort staff think to engage an emergency shut-off, not to mention warn guests of a faulty, dangerous amenity.”

“Due to the unsafe manner in which the Defendants operated its Premise, Plaintiff suffered and sustained bodily injuries resulting from the incident,” the lawsuit stated. “These injuries caused Plaintiff to sustain damages including past and future medical bills, and pain and suffering and mental anguish.”

The suit described Guillen as an “industrious, affectionate, loving, compassionate, energetic, cooperative, patient, and attentive father,” adding that his death “has deprived Lizette of the love and society of her husband, and the right to that affection, solace, comfort, companionship, and assistance.”

Zambrano is seeking over $1 million for damages, court costs, expenses and penalties.

Authorities added at the time that the husband and wife suffered injuries due to a "possible electric discharge." An investigation is underway.
