Woman out on bicycle ride never made it home, South Carolina police say. Here’s why

A woman died Wednesday night following a dog attack, the Florence Police Department said.

The attack happened in the Brigadoone Lane area of Florence, South Carolina, police said late Wednesday night in a news release.

Emergency responders, including members of the fire department, went to the scene after a receiving a report about an injured bicyclist, according to the release.

Members of the fire department found a 71-year-old woman who suffered severe injuries from a dog bite, police said.

The woman was taken to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead, according to the release.

The Florence County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the woman or released a cause of death.

Police said the woman was riding a bicycle when she was attacked by a dog that had gotten loose.

The woman was knocked off the bike during the attack and suffered “traumatic injuries,” police said.

No other injuries were reported.

Animal control took possession of the dog, according to the release. There was no word if the dog was tested for rabies, or euthanized.

No arrests or charges filed against the dog’s owner have been announced by police, who said they’re continuing to investigate the death along with the coroner’s office.
