Woman dies after being pushed into oncoming BART train in downtown San Francisco

A 74-year-old woman was killed after she was pushed into an oncoming train Monday night at BART’s Powell Street Station in San Francisco, transit police said.

At approximately 11 p.m. Monday, the 74-year-old victim was pushed by the suspect, a 49-year-old transient. The woman hit her head on the train and fell on the platform. She was taken to San Francisco General Hospital and later died.

The Powell Street station is one of the busiest in the system. It connects passengers to Union Square and a popular cable car stop.

This is the first homicide on the BART system this year, police said.

The suspect was booked into San Francisco County Jail Tuesday morning on charges of murder and elder abuse, police said.

BART PD is interviewing witnesses and processing evidence. The investigation includes reviewing surveillance video. Investigators are still working to determine a motive for this incident.

In a 2023 study of BART riders, 78% of current and past BART passengers say they would ride BART more often if it were cleaner and safer.

BART, which operates trains across five counties in the San Francisco Bay Area, is facing budget problems caused by a decrease in ridership following the pandemic.
