Woman killed in five-vehicle crash on I-15; two suspected of DUI

BONSALL, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — A rear-end collision turned into a five-vehicle pile-up on Interstate 15 Wednesday night, according to California Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 11:40 p.m. on southbound I-15, south of Old Highway 395, in unincorporated San Diego County. CHP officers from the Oceanside Area Office responded to the scene.

Based on their preliminary investigation, authorities determined that a 26-year-old man from Chula Vista was driving a Chevrolet Colorado in the middle southbound lane of the freeway when his vehicle rear-ended the back of a Nissan Titan.

The reason for the initial collision is still under investigation.

Following this crash, CHP said the Chevrolet became disabled in the southbound lanes of traffic, where a Volkswagen Tiguan collided into it,

Shortly after, a Toyota Camry collided into the back of the Volkswagen, authorities explained. A fifth vehicle, a Kia Soul, sideswiped the front left of the Chevrolet immediately after that.

The passenger of the Toyota, a 32-year-old woman from Compton, died from her injuries at the scene, CHP confirmed. Her identity has not yet been released.

The driver of the Toyota, a 32-year-old from Perris, was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with life-threating injuries.

All other parties involved suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to authorities.

Following the multi-vehicle crash, the driver of the Chevrolet, Mark Anthony Bengal, and the driver of the Volkswagen, Phillip Mattson, were both placed under arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence, CHP reported.

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing. CHP is asking anyone who has information or may have witnessed this crash to contact the Oceanside Area CHP office at 760-643-3400.
