Woman struck, killed after exiting car on side of Pasco County highway

PASCO COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A woman was struck and killed by a driver after stepping out of her vehicle on the side of a Pasco County highway.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the incident happened on Saturday morning around 12:10 a.m. on SR-54.

A 21-year-old Lutz man driving a Ford Exploring was heading eastbound in the outside lane, approaching Crescent Mood Drive.

At the same time, a 40-year-old Land O Lakes woman in a Honda Civic was stopped on the side of the road for an unknown reason.

FHP said as the driver of the Explorer was passing by the stopped vehicle, the woman opened her driver door, stepped out, and was hit by his truck.

Officials said the woman died at the scene of the crash, while her passenger, a 37-year-old Odessa man, suffered minor injuries.

The drive of the Explorer was not hurt.
