Woman, 2 children die after pontoon boat capsizes at Lake Powell. What we know

One woman and two children died after a pontoon boat capsized at Lake Powell on Friday, the Coconino County Sheriff's Office said.

According to the Sheriff's Office, a 25-foot privately owned pontoon was being towed by another boat when waves capsized the pontoon in Lake Powell near buoy 12 and the mouth of Navajo Canyon. The Glen Canyon Regional Communications Center was alerted of the overturned boat at 3:18 p.m. Friday.

Here's what's known so far on the fatal capsizing of the pontoon boat.

Who was on the pontoon boat?

There were 11 passengers and several were trapped under the overturned boat, officials said. According to the Sheriff's Office, all passengers were related family members.

Glen Canyon rangers responded to the incident and observed one person on top of the pontoon, several in the water and some unaccounted for, officials said. Nearby boaters also helped get victims out of the water.

Officials said that two passengers were sent to the hospital for further treatment. Two 4-year-old boys and 72-year-old Melissa Bean died during the incident.

How did the pontoon boat capsize?

According to the Sheriff's Office, the 25-foot pontoon was being towed by another boat when waves capsized the pontoon in Lake Powell near buoy 12 and the mouth of Navajo Canyon.

Were there injuries?

Two passengers, a 12-year-old girl and an adult man, were sent to the hospital for further treatment, officials said. The girl was in critical condition as of July 28.

Two 4-year-old boys and 72-year-old Melissa Bean died during the incident.

The National Park Service, Coconino County Sheriff's Office, and the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office were investigating the incident.
