New Woodbury County jail facing transportation issues
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — A Tuesday update from the Woodbury County Law Enforcement Center Authority indicates there are many warranty issues to be resolved in the new building.
Shane Albrecht with Baker Group identified 10 pages of “warranty” issues that the builder will have one year to fix.
Meanwhile, public transportation to and from the facility, which is located on the city’s far north side, is also raising eyebrows. Sioux City Transit currently does not have a route that runs near the new jail.
According to Woodbury County sheriff Chad Sheehan, the city transportation director has indicated there are no plans to provide transportation to that area. The nearest stops right now are at 7th and Lewis Street and at the Walmart on Floyd Boulevard. Sheehan said that when prisoners are released, he expects many to walk back to downtown.

“Not to say that we don’t want to be part of the solution, but we don’t have a bus, we don’t have a transit authority group,” Sheehan said. “So the police department I would assume will have an increase of call volume if there isn’t some route of public transportation figured out.”
“It was represented to the public that there would be something to solve transportation,” Dan Moore with the LEC Authority said.
Sheehan said he was told the addition of a part-time route would cost several hundred thousand dollars. The issue was first discussed back in 2020, according to Moore.
