Worcester man arrested, charged in 16-year-old double homicide

WORCESTER — State police detectives arrested a Worcester man early Friday morning on murder charges stemming from a 2008 double homicide in Taunton, according to the office of Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III.

Kaylen Scott, 36, of Worcester, was one of two men indicted on Thursday after a grand jury investigation into the deaths of brothers Kevin and Sean Vargas, in what has been described as an armed robbery that went wrong. The second man indicted, Steven Fordham, 38, of Taunton, was arrested Thursday night, according to Quinn's office.

Scott and Fordham are each charged with two counts of murder.

Shawn and Kevin Vargas were fatally shot in Kevin Vargas' apartment on Somerset Avenue in Taunton on Feb. 24, 2008. Kevin Vargas's two sons, 4 and 2 years old, were present at the time of the shootings, but were uninjured.

Shawn Vargas was 21 and Kevin Vargas was 23.

Scott and Fordham were ordered held without bail during a Friday appearance at Fall River Superior Court, Quinn's office said. A pretrial hearing is set for Aug. 15.

They are not the first two people to have faced charges in the Vargas homicides.

In 2016, two other men were indicted in connection with the case.

One of them, Keith Cox of Berkley, pleaded guilty to charges of manslaughter and armed robbery.

The second, Matthew Lander of Swansea, who was accused of being the driver for the three others involved in the crime, was found not guilty of all charges against him. His attorney had argued that Lander had no knowledge that anything like a double homicide was going to happen.
