York man charged with murder after allegedly stomping on prison cellmate's face: affidavit

A York man has been charged with murder in the death of his cellmate at a state prison in Cumberland County on Tuesday, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Shaquille Tyrin Gibson, 30, of York has been charged with murder in the first- and third-degree in the death of 57-year-old Bernard Grover, also known as Kevin Beattie, of Philadelphia, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

State police allege Gibson physically assaulted Grover after lockdown on July 1 at the State Correctional Institution Camp Hill in Lower Allen Township. The two had an ongoing disagreement, the affidavit states.

Gibson told investigators that he punched his cellmate, who was lying in the bottom bunk, about eight to 10 times in the face, state police allege in the affidavit. When he heard the victim wheezing and struggling to breathe, he stomped on the Grover's face approximately eight to 10 times with his foot.

State police allege Gibson pulled sheets over Grover's body to conceal it, the affidavit states.

During the morning count, Gibson stood in front of the door and window of the cell to obscure the corrections officer's view, the affidavit states.

Prison guard finds victim with blood on his face

A corrections officer checked on the victim after Gibson informed prison staff that his cellmate would not be coming out for his insulin medication, the affidavit states.

The corrections officer found Grover lying in a fetal position with blood covering his face as well as blood spatter on the wall, the affidavit states.

Prison staff provided life-saving measures until an ambulance arrived and advance life support measures were continued, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections. Beattie was pronounced dead at 8:16 a.m. Tuesday.

Troopers responded to the prison to investigate the death. The staff reported that Gibson was wearing boots and socks that appeared to be bloody, the affidavit states.

During the investigation, state police collected items including bloody bed sheets and Gibson's clothing and boots, the affidavit states.

An autopsy will be done to determine the cause and manner of Grover's death, state police said in a news release.

Suspect remains at SCI Camp Hill for now

Gibson will remain at the state prison in Cumberland County, but he will later be transferred to another institution under the Department of Corrections policy, state police said in a news release.

Gibson has been an inmate at SCI Camp Hill since March 31, 2022, a spokesperson for the state Department of Corrections said in an email. He is serving time for robbery of a motor vehicle.

Gibson and the victim have been cellmates since Feb. 11, 2024, the spokesperson said.

Grover, also known as Beattie, was convicted of burglary in Philadelphia County and was serving a 22- to 55-year sentence at the time of his death, the state Department of Corrections said in a news release. He had been at the prison since February 2023.

Second death reported at SCI Camp Hill

The state Department of Corrections announced Wednesday that another inmate died at the prison earlier this week.

Bryan Conrad, 50, was found unresponsive in his cell on July 1, a news release states. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at 3 p.m.

Conrad was serving a 4- to 8-year sentence for failure to comply with registration of sexual offenders requirements in Cumberland County, the release states. He had been at the prison since April 6, 2023.

State police are investigating his death.
