A sunken boat dating back to World War II is the latest object to emerge from a shrinking reservoir that straddles Nevada and Arizona. The Higgins landing craft that has long been 185 feet (56 meters) below the surface is now nearly halfway out of the water at Lake Mead. The boat lies less than a mile from Lake Mead Marina and Hemingway Harbor.
A 28-year-old Texas man accused of orchestrating the horrific smuggling operation that killed 53 migrants this week frantically texted the driver when the truck went off the radar and later admitted to a confidential informant he had no idea the air conditioning had failed in the sweltering big-rig, the feds say. Christian Martinez, 28, was arrested Tuesday on a trafficking charge involving death that could land him life in prison or the death penalty after migrants reportedly battled debilitating temperatures up to 150 degrees inside the truck. Martinez's string of texts with the semi-truck's alleged driver, 45-year-old Homero Zamorano Jr., were detailed in a criminal complaint obtained by The Daily Beast on Friday.

Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., claimed Thursday that a Secret Service agent who may testify before the Jan. 6 committee about the timeline of events that unfolded around former President Donald Trump during the riot "likes to lie." Two Secret Service agents, Tony Ornato and Robert Engel, are prepared to testify before Congress that then-President Donald Trump did not lunge at a steering wheel or assault them in an attempt to go to the Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot, a source close to the Secret Service told Fox News' David Spunt this week. The explosive new allegations were made on Tuesday by Cassidy Hutchinson, a former top aide to Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows.
Former Trump staffer Alyssa Farah revealed Thursday that she was instrumental in this week's January 6 committee hearing, claiming she directed Cassidy Hutchinson to Liz Cheney for her explosive testimony earlier this week. During Thursday's episode of “New Day,” Farah – who resigned from the Trump administration in December and has been vocal about her distaste since – told her CNN co-hosts that Hutchinson came to her directly, saying that there was more information she wanted to give the committee after her initial testimony. She did her interview, she complied with the committee, but she shared with me 'There is more I want to share that was not asked in those settings.
The Capitol insurrection dominated Thursday's debate in Wyoming as Congresswoman Liz Cheney faced her four Republican primary challengers. Cheney pressed her Trump-backed opponent on whether she agreed with Trump's 2020 election fraud claims. (July 1)
An American Airlines passenger spent nearly four hours trying to rebook his seats over the phone. An American Airlines passenger who spent nearly four hours on hold with the airline's customer-service center grew so frustrated he drove 45 minutes to the airport to rebook his seats at the ticket counter. Brian Driver, a radio station manager, needed to rebook his flight home after a business trip to Denver ended early, The Wall Street Journal reported.
New testimony from the most recent Jan. 6 committee hearing shows that former President Donald Trump is a “disgrace” who is “unfit to be anywhere near power ever again,” according to right-wing news website the Washington Examiner. Cassidy Hutchinson, an aide to Mark Meadows while he was Trump's White House chief of staff, gave jaw-dropping testimony Tuesday that indicated Trump knew his supporters were armed and potentially violent but encouraged them to help him overthrow the 2020 election anyway.
A Texas woman suspected in the fatal shooting of professional cyclist Anna Moriah Wilson at an Austin home has been arrested in Costa Rica, the U.S. Marshals Service said Thursday. Kaitlin Marie Armstrong, 34, was arrested Wednesday at a hostel on Santa Teresa Beach in Provincia de Puntarenas, the Marshals Service said in a statement. “The Marshals Service elevated the Kaitlin Armstrong investigation to major case status early in this investigation, which likely played a key role in her capture after a 43-day run,” said U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Texas Susan Pamerleau.
Until yesterday, it was hard to imagine how Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas could have made the Court's term any worse. Thomas is considered the ideological godfather of an emboldened, far-right majority on the Court that in the past week alone weakened Miranda rights for people detained by cops, removed the Environmental Protection Agency's power to actually protect the environment and obliterated the national right to an abortion for women. In that last instance, Thomas didn't write the majority opinion but he did pen an inflammatory concurrence inviting challenges to the rights to same-sex marriage and contraception, but notably not interracial marriage, something that's obviously very dear to his heart.
The Forest Park Police Department is warning residents of a local increase in car thefts of Kia and Hyundai brand vehicles, similar to instances reported in other cities across the country. The thefts are mainly of Kia cars newer than 2011 and Hyundai cars newer than 2015. Forest Park police say there were six reported thefts of these vehicle brands since June 21 from large apartment complexes at night.
California on Thursday approved a plan to tax the electric vehicle battery metal lithium to generate revenue for environmental remediation projects despite industry concerns that it will harm the sector and delay shipments to automakers. Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, approved the tax as part of a must-pass state budget on Thursday. The state legislature had signed off on the levy during deliberations on Wednesday night.

President Joe Biden mostly played straight man to “The Late Late Show” host James Corden in his White House visit that aired Thursday, but the commander in chief still managed a funny burn of former President Donald Trump. As the president showed off his moon rock display, Corden encouraged him to put the item on eBay. Corden surveyed the rest of the office and noted, “A lot of this stuff, worth a lot of money.”
A British documentary filmmaker who recently testified behind closed doors to the House Jan. 6 select committee said that former President Donald Trump is living in “cloud cuckoo land,” and is incapable of ever acknowledging that his claims about voter fraud are “delusional.” Holder was granted exclusive access to Trump and his family in the months before and after the 2020 election, giving him the opportunity to compile over 100 hours of footage of the former president, his two eldest sons and eldest daughter talking in interviews and among themselves. When the Jan. 6 select committee learned of the project — which will be aired by Discovery+ in the coming months — they subpoenaed him hoping to find footage of the Trumps speaking candidly about events that are the subject of the investigation.
At 75 years old, I can remember life before Roe v. Wade, a decision that came out of the 1970s, a decade when we women became vocal on how we were treated and perceived on many issues: wages, access to high-level jobs, whether we could work and be parents. Roe was caught up in the melee. After all these years, it seems that Roe was an unnecessary issue.
Indiana abortion laws unchanged, but effect still felt across state While Indiana law did not change last week when the Supreme Court issued its groundbreaking Dobbs decision, abortion providers here have felt an effect, experiencing a dramatic increase in the number of patients coming to their clinics from neighboring states with more restrictive policies. Since Friday, the abortion clinics where Dr. Katie McHugh, an independent obstetrician-gynecologists works have seen “an insane amount of requests” from pregnant people in Kentucky and Ohio, where it is far more difficult to get an abortion. A ban on abortions after six weeks took effect on last week in Ohio.
On May 5, a Class 8 Waymo Via truck operating in autonomous mode with a human safety operator behind the wheel was hauling a trailer northbound on Interstate 45 toward Dallas, Texas. At 3:11 p.m., just outside Ennis, the modified Peterbilt was traveling in the far right lane when a passing truck and trailer combo entered its lane. The driver of the Waymo Via truck told police that the other semi truck continued to maneuver into the lane, forcing Waymo's truck and trailer off the roadway.
The reappearance of an invasive snail species forced state officials to enact a quarantine order last week for residents of Florida's Pasco County, an area north of Tampa along the gulf coast. Authorities took action after confirming that a notoriously destructive breed of mollusk, known as the giant African land snail, was identified by a community gardener in the city of Port Richey. A division of Florida's department of agriculture that manages pest control began to survey the region for additional snail sightings once the quarantine mandate was in place, according to the agency.

Local media reported the foam came from a sewage gully that overflowed under the downpour.
A 60-year-old Century Village resident, who calls herself “Angry Patriot Hippie,” collapsed and was taken to a hospital this week after a jury convicted her of threatening to kill FBI agents who wanted to quiz her about her possible involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021 assault on the U.S. Capitol. The unnerving scene that played out in U.S. District Court wasn't completely unexpected. Shortly after Suzanne Kaye was arrested last year at her home in the sprawling retirement community west of Boca Raton, her attorneys warned that she was in poor health.
But the cringiest, creepiest, scariest moment of all was when Kari Lake asked for a show of hands of how many of the four candidates believe the 2020 presidential election was “corrupt and stolen”. Three hands immediately shot up. After all this, they think the election was stolen After sample audits and a “full forensic audit” found no evidence that the election was rigged … After eight unsuccessful lawsuits, including a two-day detailed hearing that produced no evidence that Trump was robbed...
Among the world's present-day religions, Zoroastrianism, founded more than 3,000 years ago, is one of the most ancient and historically influential. Starting Friday, about 1,200 attendees from 16 countries will be assessing their faith's prospects during the four-day World Zoroastrian Congress in New York City, the first one held in the United States since 2000. Prospects for growth are limited, given that Zoroastrians don't seek to convert outsiders and — in many cases — don't consider the children of mixed marriages to be members of the faith.
“Left unchecked, if artificial intelligence reaches cognition … it will be fueled by some of the most inhumane impulses of humanity.”
“Now is the time to stop and think — before our technology outstrips us once again.”
“I don't want to talk about sentient robots, because at all ends of the spectrum there are humans harming other humans.”
“Minds can take different forms … We should avoid reducing questions about AIs to ‘Can AIs think and feel like us?’”
“To identify sentience, or consciousness, or even intelligence, we’re going to have to work out what they are.”
