Vietnamese-American Michael Nguyen was detained in July last year while travelling in the country with two activists, who were also arrested. The trio were accused of setting up a group to prepare armed protest and the occupation of official "headquarters" in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, according to state-run news site VnExpress.
Britain does not expect the United States to request that the United Kingdom joins a war with Iran and London would be unlikely to agree to join such a conflict, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said on Tuesday. "The U.S. is our closest ally, we talk to them the whole time, we consider any requests that they say carefully, but I cannot envisage any situation where they request or we agree to any moves to go to war," Hunt told parliament. The message we are sending with our partners in the European Union particularly the French and the Germans is that with respect to Iran's nuclear programme, this is a crucial week.

Conditions in Texas migrant detention centres are the “worst I've ever seen”, a Republican from the state has admitted, after reports from lawyers suggested children were enduring lice infestations, flu infections and nights sleeping on cold concrete floors. Representative Michael McCaul added that “at a minimum”, Congress should create a humanitarian aid package for young people being held near the US-Mexico border. He blamed a lack of action by politicians for the filthy conditions.
Four people, including three children, found dead in South Texas near the border with Mexico likely died of dehydration and heat exposure after crossing the Rio Grande into the U.S., authorities said Monday. A law enforcement official close to the investigation told The Associated Press the four were overcome by the heat and foul play is not suspected. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the person isn't authorized to speak publicly about the bodies found Sunday.

Malaysia's Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said he underestimated the challenges of governing the country before his shock election victory last year. I underestimated because we were on the outside and we didn't get any information on what was happening on the inside,” Mahathir said in an interview with Bloomberg Television's Haslinda Amin in Bangkok at the 5th Bloomberg Asean Business Summit. We are having a very tough time dealing with damages in the finances as well as the crimes that were committed.
When Democrats seeking the nomination for president debate June 26 and 27, they will try to move up the leaderboard while avoiding a flub that could ruin their chances. Don't expect the kind of theater Republicans displayed in their first debate in 2015 when Fox's Megyn Kelly asked candidate Donald Trump why he had referred to some women as "fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals." Trump shot back in a way that the nation has since come to know well: "I've been challenged by so many people, and I don't frankly have time for total political correctness."

The Turkish lira, bonds and shares gained on Monday after the opposition dealt a stinging blow to President Tayyip Erdogan by winning control of Istanbul in a re-run mayoral election on Sunday. Turkish assets have lost value since March amid uncertainty over how the vote might affect Erdogan's economic policies and concern over strained relations between Ankara and Washington related to Turkey's purchase of Russian S-400 defence systems. One banker said the outcome had removed a source of political uncertainty and markets were hoping the government would now shift its attention to the economic reforms that Turkey needs.
The construction strategy for the Orca and other drones is to engineer a new “upgradeable,” multi-mission drone able to quickly integrate new technology and payloads as they emerge. The Navy is planning to launch a massive, 50-ton undersea drone to expand mission scope, increase attack options, integrate large high-tech sensors, further safeguard manned combat crews and possibly fire torpedoes -- all while waging war under the ocean surface. The 50-ton Orca, which would not fit in a submarine launch tube, brings an unprecedented sensing, endurance and attack advantage.
Italy's hardline Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said he would hold the Netherlands and the European Union "responsible" for the fate of 42 migrants that Rome has blocked from disembarking at Italian ports for over a week. The former vice president doesn't need to win the debate, he just needs not to lose, as his 19 rivals seek to break out of the unprecedentedly large Democratic field by taking him on. “The biggest risk and peril for Biden is Joe Biden,” said Mary Anne Marsh, a Democratic consultant based in Boston. Biden, 76, benefits from high name recognition, strong relationships with party leaders and a perception that he's the most “electable” Democrat to put up against President Donald Trump, 73.

Missouri health officials on Friday refused to renew the St. Louis clinic's license on the grounds that it failed to meet their standards. On Monday, Stelzer ruled the clinic can stay open until Friday but ruled that the case must go before the Administrative Hearing Commission, which serves as an independent arbiter in disputes between state agencies and individuals or groups. If Missouri officials succeed in closing the clinic, the state would become the only U.S. state without a legal abortion facility.
All the reasons. The Navy Would Love to 'Sink' The Littoral Combat Ship. Given the embarrassing cost overruns and frequent mechanical failures that have plagued the program, the exquisitely-detailed report suggests that the Navy has run out of patience for the disappointment mill that is the Littoral Combat Ship, once the backbone of the future fleet that could have 355 ships. After 16 years and billions of dollars, the Navy may have finally acknowledged that its Littoral Combat Ship program looks like a miserable failure.
Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday his country will do "everything" to prevent arch-rival Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, during a visit by a senior Russian security official. "Israel will not allow Iran, which calls for our destruction, to entrench on our border; we will do everything to prevent it from attaining nuclear weapons," Netanyahu said. He was speaking alongside Nikolai Patrushev, the head of Moscow's powerful security council, whose visit followed weeks of simmering tensions between Tehran and Washington in the Gulf.

This morning, GLAAD published research that shows that young people—apparently overwhelmed by the “newness” of the variety of sexual preferences and gender identities, and the anti-LGBT animus of the Trump administration—are becoming less accepting of LGBTQ people. In its fifth annual Accelerating Acceptance Index, GLAAD found that the only age-group to post a decline in acceptance of LGBTQ people was 18- to 34-year-olds. The study, conducted by the Harris Poll, looked at acceptance levels across seven areas: learning a family member is LGBT, learning one's doctor is LGBT, having LGBT members at one's place of worship, seeing an LGBT co-worker's wedding picture, having one's child placed in a class with a LGBT teacher, seeing a same-sex couple holding hands, and learning one's child has a lesson on LGBT history in school.
