Karl Williams from Brooklyn, N.Y., believes that Black people have “nothing to win” in this year's presidential race with either President Trump or former Vice President Joe Biden. “There's no policy platform being presented that's going to address any needs of Black men,” Williams, an investor who trades options, said in a video interview with Yahoo News. Despite this conviction, Williams plans to vote for Trump for a second time on Nov. 3.
A New York City man was swarmed by rats after he fell more than a dozen feet into a sinkhole when a pavement caved in. Leonard Shoulders, 33, from the Bronx, New York, was waiting for a bus at 3rd Avenue on Saturday, when the pavement he was standing on collapsed, according to the Daily Mail. Mr White said that his brother told him that he could not move as rats were crawling all over him, and added: “He didn't scream, because he didn't want the rats going into his mouth.”

Around 10,000 people in Bangladesh rallied in the South Asian nation's capital on Tuesday to protest France's president and his staunch support of secular laws that deem caricatures depicting the Prophet Muhammad as protected under freedom of speech. Protesters from the conservative Islami Andolon Bangladesh group, which supports the introduction of Islamic law in the Muslim-majority country, carried banners and placards reading: “All Muslims of the world, unite” and “Boycott France.” It was the largest protest yet against the cartoons in recent days.
Congress has left town without approving another coronavirus aid bill as virus cases surge across the nation and the economic recovery threatens to stall out. The prospect for a coronavirus aid bill before the election all but dissipated when Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell adjourned the Senate after it voted along party lines to confirm Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court. The chamber will not reconvene until November 9.

The meme, shared on Facebook, depicts an encounter between Joe Biden and a person wearing a helmet who is turned away from the camera. There's a speech bubble over Biden's head which reads “I don't work for you!” as Biden points at the person, insinuating he said that to the person.

Ohio's Wood County is a mix of just about everything that makes the entire state an election bellwether with its growing suburbs, a farm culture rooted in conservative values and a university that attracts younger, liberal-leaning voters. It's also one of nine counties in the state that flipped for President Donald Trump after backing Democrat Barack Obama in the previous two elections. Only once since 1964 has Wood County not picked the presidential winner.
A research team made a worrisome discovery off the Siberian coast, The Guardian reports. The scientists say they believe they are first to uncover observational evidence that frozen methane deposits in the Arctic Ocean have started to be released after determining that methane levels at the ocean's surface were four to eight times higher than expected. The deposits are considered "sleeping giants of the carbon cycle" and could theoretically expedite climate change, given that methane has a warming effect 80 times stronger than carbon dioxide over a 20 year period, The Guardian notes.

As the US Senate confirmed Donald Trump's pick Amy Coney Barrett for the Supreme Court, many top Democratic senators warned that their Republican colleagues may rue the day they decided to force through the nomination with just over a week to go before the presidential election. Democrat Senator Chuck Schumer said Monday will go down as one of the “darkest days in the Senate's history” as Senate Republicans are “breaking 231 years of precedent and becoming the first majority to confirm a Supreme Court Justice this close to a presidential election day”.

Joe Biden plans to scrap what he calls the "dangerous failure" of President Donald Trump's maximum pressure policy on Iran should he win the U.S. election, but after years of confrontation his diplomacy-first approach to a historic Middle East foe could prove an unforgiving challenge. Vice president under President Barack Obama when Iran's 2015 nuclear deal with six powers was struck, Biden has pledged that if Tehran resumes compliance with the pact he will return to the agreement, which Trump quit in 2018, reimposing sanctions. With Iran's economy crippled, its ties with Washington have been at boiling point ever since, and an international consensus over Iran's nuclear work -- which the West suspected was aimed at creating a nuclear bomb -- has been in disarray.
Hundreds of protesters marched through the US city of Philadelphia for a second night, demanding racial justice after police fatally shot a black man. The family of Walter Wallace, 27, say he was suffering a mental health crisis when officers opened fire on him. Police say they shot him because he would not drop a knife he was holding.
Scientists have discovered a "massive" detached coral reef in Australia's Great Barrier Reef — the first of its kind in over 120 years. The reef was found Oct. 20 by a team conducting a year-long underwater mapping of the region's seafloor, the Schmidt Ocean Institute said Monday in a press release. “We are surprised and elated by what we have found,” the group's leader, Dr. Robin Beaman of James Cook University, said.
Donald Trump openly mocked Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer over a plot foiled by federal authorities to kidnap her, saying it was “my people” that saved her. And we'll have to see if it's a problem, right? People are entitled to say, 'Maybe it was a problem, maybe it wasn't,'” he said during a cold and rainy Tuesday campaign stop in Lansing.
In an appearance on Fox News on Tuesday morning, McEnany was introduced as “Trump 2020 senior adviser and White House press secretary. A few hours later, Fox Business Network host Stuart Varney introduced McEnany by saying she is “serving now as adviser for the Trump campaign. McEnany's dual roles for the White House and the Trump reelection campaign immediately set off alarm bells among good-government advocates, who said they represent yet another instance of the often blurry lines between the Trump administration and the president's political operation.
Lukashenko defied an ultimatum to surrender power by midnight, challenging his opponents to carry out a threat to paralyze the country with strikes, nearly three months after his disputed election victory unleashed mass protests. If sustained, the strikes could open a new phase in the crisis, testing whether the opposition has the mass support it needs to bring enterprises across the country of 9.5 million people to a halt. The opposition has mounted some strikes at state-run factories previously, but they were not sustained.
The wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is using her Facebook page to amplify unsubstantiated claims of corruption by Joe Biden. Ginni Thomas, a longtime conservative activist, asked her more than 10,000 followers Monday to consider sharing a link focused on alleged corruption by the Democratic nominee for president and his son, Hunter, as well as claims that social media companies are censoring reports about the Bidens. Other spouses of justices also have their own professional identities, but Thomas is the only one whose work involves partisan politics that sometimes butts up against her husband's job.
A blue moon is the term for the second full moon in a single month, and a Blood Moon is simply the name for a full moon that falls in the month of October. The backdrop is rare for October 31: Full-moon Halloweens only happen every 18 or 19 years, according to The Old Farmer's Almanac. Across North America and Europe, people have used full moons to track months and seasons for thousands of years, naming each one based on the seasonal changes it indicates.
Xi has long wanted to absorb Taiwan under the Communist Party's rule—he's openly stated his ambition to “reunify” the democratic island with mainland China while he is the party's helmsman. And his strategy to dominate Taiwan includes more than gunboats, jets, and boots on the ground. For decades, party leadership in Beijing has leaned on what Xi calls his “magic weapon” to leverage trade relationships and shared ethnic roots to lay the groundwork for entrenched CCP influence in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the Chinese diaspora abroad: wielding soft power through China's United Front Work Department.
If Democratic Party candidate Joe Biden wins the Nov. 3 U.S. presidential election, the implications could be considerable for Canada after four years living with the unpredictable and combative Republican President Donald Trump. Biden's environmental plans and desire to "transition from the oil industry" could pose challenges for Canada, the world's fourth-largest crude producer, which sends virtually all its exports south of the border. Biden says he will scrap permits for TC Energy Corp's Keystone XL oil pipeline, which would run from the Canadian energy-producing province of Alberta to Nebraska.
Iran's parliament speaker said that he has tested positive for the coronavirus, joining a growing list of infected Iranian officials as the country again shattered its single-day death record with 415 new fatalities reported Wednesday. In these polarized times, a week before a bitterly fought presidential election (that her husband may or may not be competing in), Kim Kardashian West unified the country by tweeting about how she celebrated her 40th birthday. Kardashian West, "feeling so humbled and blessed" to be alive, decided she "couldn't think of a better way to spend" her birthday "than with some of the people who have helped shaped me into the woman I am today," she tweeted. After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time.
“Many are longtime Republicans wrestling with what they see as a choice between two lousy candidates.”
“Some undecideds turn out to be people who’ve long felt alienated from the two big political parties.”
“They’re not following the 24-hour news cycle. The election and politics are just not a high priority.”
“One common trait: at this stage of the game, the undecided voter doesn’t fit into an easy political profile.”
“More realistically...these voters may not be motivated to vote at all in the 2020 election.”
