Demonstrators gather Wednesday outside the Broward County elections office where workers are recounting ballots. LAUDERHILL, Fla. – Florida Democrats stood outside the Broward County elections office Wednesday afternoon in 90-degree heat, demanding that the state’s recount go forward, while a handful of Republican protesters heckled them. Democrats beside Jones held signs that said, “Little Marco is Afraid of counting our VOTES,” and “Trump, Scott, Rubio Afraid of Democracy,” referring to Sen. Marco Rubio, Gov. Rick Scott, and President Donald Trump, who have said without evidence that Democrats are trying to use subterfuge to tilt the Florida election in their favor.
Michael Avenatti, the lawyer who represents adult film star Stormy Daniels, was arrested in Los Angeles on Wednesday on allegations of domestic violence, according to several media outlets. The LAPD confirmed the arrest in an email to HuffPost, but said he had not been booked. The Associated Press notes that police had taken a report related to a domestic violence incident on Tuesday but did not bring Avenatti in until the following day, according to an anonymous law enforcement official.
The death toll in Northern California’s Camp fire rose once again on Thursday to 63 as rescue workers continue to search through the devastation left by the state’s deadliest blaze in history, authorities said. Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told those gathered at a news briefing that the number of missing persons reflected ongoing work by emergency response personnel sifting through reports, but said many of the unaccounted for may simply be displaced in shelters throughout the region. “The reason that that number went up is because after they went up, [emergency officials] didn’t stop working, they continued to work into the night,” Honea said.

WASHINGTON ― Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio) is all but announcing her intention to run for House speaker against Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), testing the waters Thursday by slamming Pelosi and foregrounding issues of race. While she stopped short of officially throwing her hat in the ring, Fudge told HuffPost she’s been “overwhelmed” by the number of people reaching out to support her potential speaker bid. According to Fudge, if the vote were held today, Pelosi would be well short of the numbers.
As search crews found another body Wednesday in a house burned by a massive Southern California wildfire, officials fear many more deaths in the destructive blazes at both ends of the state that have now claimed 59 lives. It was a historic night for James as he passed Wilt Chamberlain for fifth on the all-time NBA scoring list midway through last night's game in the fourth quarter with 39 points. Singer Pink‘s husband Carey Hart‘s post — warning looters in Malibu, the location of the Woolsey Fire, that they “will be shot on” sight — has gone viral.
More than a week after first igniting in Butte County, California, the news surrounding the most destructive and deadly wildfire in California history remains grim. The death toll from the Camp Fire increased to 63 on Thursday, as investigators continued
China has been pouring money into the Pacific Island nation, injecting at least $5.9 billion of infrastructure spending since 2011 into an economy smaller than any U.S. state. The investment has highlighted the region’s growing status as a strategic battleground between China and U.S. allies ahead of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summits, which are bringing Xi, Vice President Mike Pence and other world leaders there this week. A banner advertising the state-owned China Railway Group flew over a construction site near cruise ships being used to house delegations.
The pound plunged against the dollar and euro Thursday after ministers, including Britain's Brexit secretary Dominic Raab, quit in protest against a draft deal to exit the EU. The latest market gyrations came as the nation's business sector gave a lukewarm verdict to the proposed agreement, and amid worries that British Prime Minister Theresa May could soon face a no-confidence vote. "There's been a sharp move lower in the pound ... after Brexit minister Raab announced his resignation," said XTB analyst David Cheetham.
Workers monitor the Republican party table at the Palm Beach county supervisor of elections warehouse. Florida’s election torment is set to continue after officials ordered a hand recount of ballots in the knife-edge US Senate race between the Republican Rick Scott and the Democrat Bill Nelson. After a troubled machine recount finished on Thursday, Scott had a lead of 12,603 votes, or 0.15 percentage points – within the threshold of 0.25 points that by state law triggers a manual recount.
North Korea is reportedly continuing to develop its ballistic missile program. Satellite images appear to show numerous hidden bases in the country. But the president reassured Americans on Twitter. Following a summit with the U.S., North Korean leader Kim Jong Un agreed to dismantle his country’s main nuclear site.
At least 56 people have been killed in the devastating Camp fire in Northern California and 130 people are still missing, authorities said on Wednesday evening. Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told reporters that search and rescue officials had discovered eight additional bodies on Wednesday, adding to a rising death toll in what has become the state’s deadliest fire in history. “This is the most difficult part of my job,” Honea said.
With Democrats taking control of the House of Representatives, Trevor Noah noted on Wednesday’s “Daily Show” that they were ready to investigate President Donald Trump on a slew of matters. “Wow,” Noah said, “Mitch McConnell is brilliant. For that reason, he said, he had a video that Democrats would be required to watch, much like the sexual harassment videos that employers show to their employees.
Two women who are the mothers of two suspects in the massacre of a family, and the grandmothers of the other two, pleaded not guilty Thursday to misleading investigators of the crime, which went without any arrests for more than two years. During the court hearing, a special prosecutor said the four suspects in the 2016 killings that left eight dead met before they were arrested and talked about getting revenge against investigators, including the state's top law official. Newcomb is also charged with forgery.

The U.S. Treasury Department sanctions were the first concrete response by the Trump administration to Khashoggi's death in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October. Among those sanctioned were Saud al-Qahtani, who has been removed from his position as a top aide to the powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, as well as the Saudi Consul General Mohammad al-Otaibi and members of a 15-person team Turkey has identified as being involved in Khashoggi's death. The sanctions do not target the Riyadh government, an important U.S. security and economic ally.
Three hours after a federal judge ruled against Nelson’s request that the deadline for Florida’s mechanical recount be extended, election officials announced the tabulation had boosted Scott’s 12,562-vote lead by 41 votes out of 8.2 million cast in a state that will be pivotal in the 2020 presidential contest. In the race for governor, the machine recount confirmed that Republican Ron DeSantis had defeated Democrat Andrew Gillum. Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner also called for a hand recount in the race for agriculture commissioner.
US Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday said there were no double standards at play when he criticised Myanmar for jailing two Reuters journalists, given the White House's own combative relationship with Washington media. President Donald Trump routinely criticises reporting he dislikes as "fake news" and often labels journalists "enemies of the people". In the administration's latest spat with the media the White House pulled the credentials of a CNN correspondent, promoting a court challenge by major news networks.
Don’t get me wrong, I like a good pumpkin pie, but every Thanksgiving I try to push the boundaries of this festive gourd. Think about it: gooey, fudgy chocolate swirled with dense cheesecake tinted with earthy pumpkin and warm spices. A combo of bittersweet and semisweet chocolate is used to make a ganache with ― wait for it ― brown butter for rich, nutty notes before getting amped up by instant espresso, cocoa powder and vanilla.
NEW YORK ― Locals are being force-fed a Silicon Valley-sized meal, and all they can hope is that they don’t get poisoned. This week, Amazon announced its plans for a gigantic corporate campus in the Queens neighborhood of Long Island City. In a matter of 15 years, this waterfront community of 20,000 will absorb a gargantuan development with 8 million square feet of office space ― the equivalent of three Empire State Buildings, The New York Times points out ― and tens of thousands of daily workers. Meanwhile, Amazon will receive $1.7 billion in incentives from the state and another $1.3 billion from the city, including a taxpayer-funded helicopter pad, just for moving in.
A security guard who was working at a suburban Chicago bar when a black co-worker was fatally shot by a white police officer said Wednesday that he never heard the officer order the other man to drop his gun. The comments from Dorian Myrickes came hours after Illinois State Police released a statement saying witnesses have told investigators that the officer ordered security guard Jemel Roberson to drop his gun before opening fire. Myrickes, who was shot in the shoulder, told The Associated Press in a phone interview from his hospital room that he clearly heard several people shout at the officer that Roberson — who was holding a suspect at gunpoint — was a security guard.
After Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke visited Northern California communities hit by the Camp fire, the deadliest in state history, he acknowledged that wildfires are getting worse in the Golden State ― but managed to not say the words “climate change” once. “[Fire] season is getting longer, the temperatures are getting hotter,” Zinke said at a press conference Wednesday with California Gov. Jerry Brown. Noting that this was his fourth visit in a year to California in response to wildfires, Zinke said, “Each trip, I say this is the worst fire I’ve seen.
